How to spend weekend in Cartagena, Colombia

Looking for a warm-weather getaway that combines sunshine, culture, great food, and vibrant nightlife? Cartagena, Colombia is the ultimate destination for a girls’ weekend escape. With its colorful streets, rooftop bars, nearby islands, and world-class restaurants, this Caribbean gem offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation.

We visited Cartagena for a long weekend in early March and were completely charmed by the city’s energy, beauty, and hospitality. The weather was a perfect 90°F and sunny every day—ideal for island-hopping and rooftop cocktails. Whether you’re planning a bachelorette or just a fun trip with your best friends, this 4-day itinerary has everything you need.

Day 1: Arrival & Old Town Exploring

Check-in to boutique hotel or AirBnB

Fly into Cartagena and check into a boutique hotel or Airbnb in Old Town (The Walled City)— a charming and walkable area of the city. We stayed in a spacious two-bedroom Airbnb with a private pool, jacuzzi, and rooftop lounge. It was the perfect home base for our group of girls, and we felt completely safe walking around the area.

Another option is the Bocagrande neighborhood, known for its modern high-rise hotels and sleek, Miami-like vibe. It’s just a short drive from Old Town, but we ultimately chose to stay within the Walled City to be closer to the vibrant dining and nightlife scene.Style

The Walled City is filled with vibrant architecture, bougainvillea-covered balconies, and cobblestone streets. It’s incredibly walkable, with great shopping, cafés, and photo ops on every corner.

Dinner & Rooftop Drinks at Alquímico

Ease into your trip with dinner and cocktails at Alquímico, one of Cartagena’s most iconic spots. This trendy three-story bar offers creative craft cocktails, great food, and an electric atmosphere.

Tip: It gets busy fast, so go early if you’re with a group. We went for dinner and stayed for drinks before heading to another rooftop bar nearby.

Optional Nightcap at Mirador Gastro Bar

If you’re still up for more, walk over to Mirador Gastro Bar, a lively rooftop with views of the Walled City and a fun dance vibe.

Day 2: Island-Hopping Adventure

Private Boat Day to the Rosario Islands

One of the best ways to experience Cartagena is from the water. Book a private boat tour to the nearby Rosario Islands and Barú for a day of sun, swimming, and stunning beaches.

Our boat day was a highlight of the trip. We snorkeled in crystal-clear coves, floated in the warm water, and even stopped at a beach club for lunch. If your budget allows, going private is 100% worth it for the flexibility and comfort.

Note: Most boats return by mid-afternoon, as the sea can get choppy later in the day.

Sunset Cocktails at Café del Mar

After freshening up, head to Café del Mar—a famous open-air bar located on top of the city walls. It’s the go-to spot for a stunning sunset with ocean views and breezy vibes.

Tip: Reservations are highly recommended! The line can get long around golden hour. Come early for cocktails and tapas, and stay for the photo ops.

Dinner at Celele

For something truly special, dine at Celele, one of Latin America’s top-ranked restaurants. Their modern Caribbean cuisine is vibrant, flavorful, and artfully plated. The flower salad is not only a fan favorite—it’s also super Instagrammable.

Day 3: Culture, Seafood & Salsa

Lunch at La Cevichería

This iconic spot made famous by Anthony Bourdain is a must-visit for seafood lovers. We were amazed by how many ceviche options were on the menu. Everything we tried was fresh, zesty, and full of flavor.

After lunch, grab a scoop of getato from one of the many nearby shops – we opted for some cocktail-flavored gelato.

Salsa Class or Street Shopping

Spend your afternoon diving into Cartagena’s culture:

  • Take a salsa dancing class with a local instructor for some laughs and new moves.
  • Wander the streets for local shopping—you’ll find woven bags, artisan jewelry, hats, and art everywhere.

Chiva Party Bus Tour

End your night with a ride on a Chiva party bus—a colorful, open-air bus filled with music, dancing, and drinks. It’s a quintessential Colombian experience and the perfect way to let loose with your crew.

We were told to be mindful of pickpocketing, but we didn’t have any issues. Just keep your belongings secure and enjoy the ride!

Day 4: Coffee, Brunch & Farewell

Before heading to the airport, squeeze in a relaxed brunch at one of Old Town’s cozy cafés. We paired our meals with strong Colombian coffee and even grabbed bags of local beans to take home as souvenirs.

Optional Add-Ons for a Longer Trip

If you have an extra day or want to customize your weekend, here are a few bonus activities:

  • Spa Day in Bocagrande – Treat yourself to a massage or facial at one of the seaside hotels.
  • Professional Photoshoot – Book a local photographer for a mini shoot in the colorful streets of Old Town.
  • Sunset Cruise – Opt for a luxury catamaran cruise with drinks, music, and ocean views.

Travel Tips for Cartagena

Sun Protection: Cartagena is near the equator—don’t skimp on SPF! Hats, sunglasses, and scalp sunscreen are essentials.

Language: Many restaurants have English menus, but not all staff speak English. A little Spanish (or a translation app) goes a long way!

Where to Stay:

  • Old Town: More cultural charm, food options, and walkability.
  • Bocagrande: More modern, beachfront, and usually more budget-friendly. We stayed at Hotel Estelar on a previous trip—great rooftop pool and spa.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, planning a reunion, or just need a break with your best friends, Cartagena is the ultimate girls’ weekend destination. With its mix of colonial charm, island vibes, and unforgettable nightlife, it’s the kind of place you’ll talk about long after you get home.

We made so many amazing memories in Cartagena and are already dreaming about our next trip back.
